To improve one’s mental health and continue nourishing one’s soul is in our own hands. A healthy state of mind enables the individual to grow physically, intellectually, socially, spiritually and professionally, and opens the doors to equalization within the community. You’d often see that a positive thought helps us to experience happy moments, and we’d experience the opposite when we focus on negative features of an event or an object. We automatically and effortlessly focus on the environment and continue to learn unconsciously. This phenomenon is one of the strongest contributors in shaping our personality.

The opportunities to learn are countless. They are constantly present, everything that happens around us all the time. Here are the characteristics to make yourself a motivated, opportunity-oriented person:

1. Welcoming others

Welcoming others for everything that you want to achieve is a classic trait to have and practice. It would help you feel safer and more confident. Anyone will like to see you when they feel welcomed. Inviting someone to share, communicate or discuss their own ideas is mutually beneficial.

2. Be Expressive

A key feature is your expression, to have a balanced expression. The term “balanced” means-

• Free of blame, attacks and threats
• A true sharing of feelings of yourself
• With clear expectations that your ideas might not be accepted by others
• Focus on getting solutions
• Open to welcome options
• Full of respect • Straightforward
• Not exceedingly emotional
• Not necessary to be logical
• Factual and brief
• Easy to understand by others whom you want to convey to
• Must have an objective
• Take your self-respect into account

You can imagine this expression just like a writer who writes for the target audience. For example, if your audience is your partner, present your feelings with words. If you use this technique, your partner will understand your perspectives with convenience and clarity.  If you are creative enough, use these ways below to project happily and healthily.

1. Write proses/poetry/poems
2. Maintain a daily journal
3. Stick on your bulletin a daily summary of your feelings
4. Storytelling with the name of someone imaginary i.e. if you are in anger you can share your feelings with “Mr Hot Pot or Mr Pressure Cooker
5. Doodle or draw anything
6. Dance or sing, pick moves/lyrics similar to your feelings
7. Framing of images similar to your issues, isolation, fear, bereavement, prejudice and harassment. Any social scenario that disturbs you, can be shown through them. It will relieve you from what you are normally unable to shed off your mind. Stay away from distress.

3.Observe Gratitude

Anywhere, anytime and for every small deed, be grateful of people, things and events that helped you grow mentally and morally. This includes whatever you did well for yourself and others too. Say thanks, or simply express your appreciations in the manner that you envision.

4. Showing and accepting support

Asking for help is not a bad thing. It really shows how courageous you are and that you have an urge to survive. The ways that form an integral part of a support system are:
1. Use words that soothe you
2. Hug whenever needed and offered
3. Smile generously
4. Hold hands and slightly touch arms
5. Offer help and ask for it, avoid burdening yourself and others
6. Participate in groups with shared interests or take part in a hobby group
7. Listen to what interests others
8. Participate where your opinions are useful

The benefits are as follows:
• Promotes acts of love, care and kindness
• Empathy, compassion and sympathy is shared around you effortlessly
• A positive gesture removes barriers
• Spreads hope, acceptance and possibilities
• Enhances interpersonal relationships

Remember that these gestures are not just to be used within your social circles, but should also be extended to those you meet.

5. Mindfulness

Pay attention to your body, sensations, feelings and movements. Even if it is difficult to focus, take a break for a minute and just do it, and then explain how you feel. Trying to stay aware of your inner and outer motions just for the present moment is a wonderful example of how healthy you are. Have you ever looked at any wall around you for a minute? Closely and keenly till you are able to describe if it is smooth and free or if it is rough? Use your eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin to gather information about everything you have in yourself and outside. This is one of the best characteristics to apply in growth and acceptance of yourself and your environment.

6. Initiate and access

Sometimes there are many avenues and resources available for help and growth but we resist and hesitate due to conditions we have faced in the past. Making full use of newly discovered resources is a sign of a healthy soul. Especially when discrimination is faced, drastic action must be considered, with due consideration to the consequences. If you > do not take action immediately, it will affect you more.

7. Planning activities and events

Take part in support groups and plan activities. It can revolve around a specific topic. For the topic, create materials to promote the event. Teamwork is key in such events and these promote individuality and exposure to ideas and opportunities. Start campaigns to encourage others to contribute. Prepare flyers, try to establish organizations, volunteer and do fundraising. In today’s cyber world, doing a website with updates on events and other information is a great way to promote individual growth.

8. Train others and celebrate together

Learning is a life long process; we are learning every day and each moment of our lives regardless of what we are doing. Share your skills and knowledge by teaching and training others. You can arrange a certification program i.e. a short course for all those who learn and become trained by you. Any planned program similar to a short course is helpful on the completion of a specific part of learning materials you offer for others. Do a part at the end of each program or an event and celebrate successes and special days relevant to the achievements towards your main goals and objectives. The above-mentioned characteristics are healthy and realistic. Practice daily and feel the growth within you.
